Understanding Keratoconus

Typically, the cornea of the eye is a round shape, however, if you have keratoconus, it causes the cornea to become thin and bulge into a cone shape. Due to the abnormal shape, light won't shine on the retina like it should. Keratoconus is not a condition that people are born with. Symptoms of the condition typically begin during puberty and progress into the mid-30s. While there is no cure for keratoconus, progression can be slowed with treatment.

Causes

Keratoconus can develop from a variety of causes. Your risk for the condition is increased if you have a family member with it as well as environmental factors. Along with that, you're also more at risk if you have Down syndrome, allergies, or asthma. Certain habits, such as rubbing your eyes frequently and UV exposure can also contribute to the condition.

Treatment

Before our eye doctor can provide you with treatment, we will perform an eye exam to determine an accurate diagnosis. We'll also review your family history and any information about previous visits. Along with that, we will speak with you about your habits and check for changes in your vision. Our optometrist may also perform additional testing, such as:

• Slit-lamp exam
• Computerized corneal mapping
• Keratometry

​​​​​​​In the early stages of keratoconus, we will monitor your progress with your keratoconus treatment and change it when necessary to optimize your vision and provide relief. Once the current treatment is not as effective, we'll recommend corneal collagen cross-linking, and if that isn't enough, we may need to refer you for surgery.
